WHO IS AWF?

AWF is the largest humanitarian design not-for-profit agency in the Southern Hemisphere. We identify future design projects that have the potential to change lives and then act as a broker between leading Australian built environment firms and communities in need, to deliver culturally appropriate and cost-effective design proposals, pro bono, to meet the specific needs of our clients.

AWF's MISSION

To transform lives through design by connecting Australia’s leading design firms with communities that need design the most.

A POWERFUL IDEA: DESIGN CAN TRULY CHANGES LIVES!

Architects Without Frontiers (AWF) has designed masterplans for climate-resilient villages to mitigate rising sea levels in the remote islands of the Pacific. In Australia’s outback, Indigenous men and women are gaining skills through culturally safe facilities – designed with them and for them. Across 24 countries, from Afghanistan to Uganda, vulnerable communities have found safety, dignity, and employment – through the power of good design, delivered free, to those who need it most.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS + WHAT DIFFERENCE DO AWF FRIENDS MAKE?

By becoming an ‘AWF Friend’, you're helping to shape a more just and inclusive built environment. Your contribution enables us to:
      • Mobilise skilled professionals to deliver pro bono design services to vulnerable communities
      • Collaborate meaningfully with Indigenous communities across Australia and the Pacific
      • Support the design and construction of health clinics, schools, women's centres, and other critical infrastructure

We can’t offer material benefits in return for your donation. However, we will continue to share stories of how your support leads to real change through our website and quarterly newsletter.

For example - because of our supporters, a remote community in Vanuatu now has access to cyclone-resistant classrooms. Because of you, we can keep doing this vital work.

Together, our goal is to have designed and delivered at least 100 projects by 2030.

We already have the design talent, the model, and the trust of the communities we serve. AWF Friends and Supporters are our essential donors.

Without them, Architects without Frontiers could not deliver on its mission: to facilitate the design and construction of health, education and community projects around the world, with and for vulnerable communities.

By investing in AWF's core design and operational capacity, you will enable:
      • More women and children to find safety
      • More health centres and schools in places that need them the most
      • More communities able to gain local employment and thrive sustainably
      • More Indeginous voices to shape their own built environments

THE CHALLENGE AHEAD FOR AWF

The design needs of many vulnerable communities are urgent and rapidly growing. Australia-wide and globally, communities are reaching out to AWF. Sadly, we must turn away nearly half of all requests due to our limited staff capacity. We want your help to close this gap.

By 2030, we aim to:
      • Design and deliver 30 new projects through our network partners, matching the total delivered in our first 15 years.
      • Double our pro bono service output and triple our community impact.
      • Grow from 1.2 to 4 full-time staff, including a fulltime CEO.

This is not just growth. This is scale with purpose.

AWF's IMPACT SO FAR

Since 2000, we have designed and delivered 72 Community Infrastructure Projects in 29 communities across 24 countries, including:
      • 5 Hospitals and Health Centres serving 15,000+ people and reducing disease burdens in 12 countries.
      • 6 Schools enabling the education of 4,480 children and allowing full-time carers to return to employment.
      • 16 Indigenous Community Facilities, including the award winning Cakaudrove Women’s Resource Centre which has delivered 58 vocational. courses to over 600 Indigenous iTaukei women in the Pacific.
      • 7 Climate-Resilient Village Masterplans for Pacific communities at risk from sea level rise.
      • 6 Women’s Crisis Response Centres in Australia, housing 350 women and children fleeing domestic violence annually.
      • For every $1 invested in AWF operations, we generate $3 in community value.
      • With just 1.2 full-time staff, we facilitate $600,000 in pro-bono services annually.

Bridging Generations: Empowering Communities Through Culturally Responsive Design. Women's Empowerment Centre in Fiji.

Sanctuary of Hope: Designing Safe Spaces for Masai Girls. A Rescue Centre in Tanzania.

Collaborate Solutions: Engineering Sustainable Infrastructure with Local Communities Incinerator Project in Nepal.

Inclusive Spaces: Designing for Accessibility and Community Connection. Disability Dar Care in Hoi An.
