Innovation in Aged Care Facility Design

6 Formal CPD Hours
7:30 am Registration
Light Breakfast and Tea/Coffee Break Included

As Australia’s ageing population grows, designers need to work hard to come up with better experiences for residents that will give them quality of life they expect and deserve.

This workshop will look at the design aspect for architects and designers to look at spaces, where equipment can be placed for easy access, without affecting aesthetics or comfort. Lighting and floor covers which are equally as important will be discussed as will be the administration area.

8:00 am – Practical  Slip Resistance
Peter Emmerson

Designing with sufficient levels of slip resistance is often poorly understood – we demonstrate the consequences of getting it wrong. Changes to standards and handbooks include a number of significant new recommendations including:

– The effects of wear and usage on slip resistance

– BCA changes including residential

– Definition of Wet, Dry and Transitional Areas

– Limitations of various AS test methods

– Benefits of certain AS test methods

The pendulum test apparatus will be set up and practical demonstrations will be included. Attendees are welcome to bring an item to test.  Metz has delivered this presentation and similar to hundreds of designers and architects throughout Australia

9:00 amDesign for Access & Mobility in the Aged Care Space
Siobhan Downey

With the baby boomer’s heading into retirement the concept of “aged care” will soon be turned on its’ head. What was once a term to describe an “old folks home” is now considered a type of accommodation not limited to include luxury Independent living units, self-care residency, high care accommodation and community housing. But with so many entering into this space with varying needs, how can we design bathrooms & kitchen spaces that will provide solutions for all residents?

9:55 amDesigning a Wellness Environment for Healthcarers
Alan Boyd

The caregivers experience impact patient experience.  When caregivers are fatigued, they admittedly say that they are less friendly and modify their activities.  But when environments, structures and supports are aligned, this results in more time interacting with patients and improved nurse morale.  Research supports the notion that happier caregivers equal happier and healthier patients.  When caregivers are more satisfied with their work environment, patient satisfaction scores improve.

11:05 am – Design, Consequence and Risk Reduction – Aged Care
Neill Sutton

This presentation focuses on ceiling track design within bedroom/bathroom layouts and how the right design can have a positive outcome for both resident and carer. Having safe patient handling programs, patient positioning and mechanical devices significantly reduce the length of stay, workplace stress, and reduction in costs thereby increasing productivity within the healthcare sector.

The presentation will also focus on fall prevention. Modern aged care design now means rooms need to resemble a luxury style home/apartment, however quality of care vs design cannot be compromised so integrated floor systems can assist carers to monitor resident movement and determine behavior across a large number of rooms.
